5 out of 5 stars Excellent budget printer, but remember to buy the cable...   March 25, 2010

This budget HP printer is aimed at the home office user, and does the job very well.
It's not packed with many exciting features, but its overall print quality and speed is very good. HP include two cartridges for you to get going, although they are the small capacity ones so they don't last all that long if you print often.
That said though replacements are not to expensive so future running costs aren't too bad.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the printer does not come with the cable that allows you to connect it to your PC or laptop. You have to buy this separately, but you can get one easily here on Amazon so no real problem.
Also, you must remember to de-activate any anti virus software on your PC before attempting the software installation. For some reason my anti virus interfered with the setup process and it took forever, in fact it failed first time - so remember to disable it and then the installation process will be a breeze.
Overall, I highly recommend this HP D1660 printer for simple home or office use.

5 out of 5 stars Suitable as portable printer   November 30, 2009

There are times when I need to have portable printing during my business travels. Some hotels are set up for this, others aren't. In most cases, it's convenient to bring along my own printing solution.

I had a Canon BJC-80 that I used several years ago. It packed in, and I had to find a replacement. The Canon Pixma iP100 Portable Inkjet Printer is nice, but a little pricey.

I then discovered this HP Deskjet D1660, inspected its dimensions, and decided to give it a go.

I packed it for a business trip in the Middle East, and it worked fine. All folded up, it's about the size of a regular bread bin. And it is light enough. It was a life saver on this particular trip.

Print quality is fine. I configured the settings to print in "Fast Draft" mode, which is noticeably quicker, uses less ink, and is sufficient for most printing requirements.

So, a portable (but checked-in flight bag) printing solution at a fraction of the price!

5 out of 5 stars Great Value for Money Printer   March 20, 2010

Very good value for this great printer. I use it for printing simple documents, and it's all thats needed. If you are wanting to print photos however, I think investing a bit more might be required.

Pros: Compact, Cheap, Cheap Ink, Good Quality Printouts
Cons: No USB cable provided

5 out of 5 stars Good value for money, remember the cable!!   June 1, 2010

This printer is great for someone who doesnt need to do alot of printing, small and compact does exactly what i need it for. The only little thing is not having the cable but bought from amazon for under a £1 you cant complain. It fully deserves its 5 stars mainly for the price it costs.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing to complain about at this price   March 15, 2010

For the money this is a very good printer indeed. It is very compact but produces very good results even on draft setting which would increase the life of the cartridge. I may be wrong but I imagine the reason some people think it "drinks ink" is because it does not come with full sized cartridges but with mini-ones.
As well as being compact and producing good print, it is also very quick for this type of printer.
All in all I have no complaints at all, but I do not actually print a lot which is why I bought this and not a more expensive one.
