5 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality   October 11, 2009

This is an example of you get what you pay for .... if you want a quality printer this is not the cheapest. However this does all that Canon claim for it the print quality is excellent and the printer itself is well built and does look the part. It was of course easy to set up and has a good array of software with it. The Canon Easy Web Print is quite is useful little addition although of course it has nothing to do with the printer quality as such. If you are after a combination of print/slide scanning and printing I can recommend the Canon combination of this printer and the Canon Scan 8800F. CanoScan 8800F Film Scanner. You will not be disappointed with the results as they are professional looking - which is important if you have gone to the trouble of scanning in old pictures you want the best output to do them justice. If you are not so worried about the final picture quality then you can buy a much cheaper printer than this. Incidentally I have not yet tried printing directly onto a DVD disc yet but that looks easy as it has a custom holder to line it all up - which when you have spent many frustrating hours trying to get perfectly aligned DVD/CD labels on to discs is a brilliant feature and worth the extra cost as well!

5 out of 5 stars And I almost didn't buy it   September 25, 2009

There are one or two negative reviews of the iP4600 printer here and I almost decided not to buy it.
I looked at the reasons for the negative reviews and saw they fell into two areas - installation time and ink.
The installation time is quite long, but you only install once and the process is clear and easy. Inks may seem expensive, but they are, from most manufacturers for their printers. I never use 3rd party inks because it is quality I want, not cheapness. I've tried 3rd party inks ages ago and they compromised the printer at the time, both mechanically, and qualitywise.
The quality of prints from this printer - stunning.
Twin paper feeds make life really easy. Small, neat, good looking printer
In short, Canon quality.
I'm so pleased I decided to buy it. An outstanding printer.
It arrived 24 hours after ordering it. Brilliant service too, from Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic value   December 14, 2009

I've had an Epson photo printer for many years. Pretty good quality, but slow - and if you don't use it for a while you have to waste a lot of ink and time cleaning the nozzles. I was thinking of a very much more expensive Epson photo printer, but reviews say that although their prints are stunning, nozzle clogging is still a problem and the inks quite expensive (especially since there are extra colours). So I thought I'd try the Canon iP4700, but I was worried by the relatively low price (shop around) and not having more than the basic colours. What a nice surprise! It's fast, and the print quality is very good. Of course genuine Canon ink and paper are expensive, and that's how they make a profit. I might try other types of paper, but will stay with Canon ink - I don't want my prints to fade or to compromise print quality. (I do ordinary b&w printing on a cheap monochrome laser printer.) I just did some A4 prints of photos I took at a concert - the colours are excellent and the black backdrop is jet black. Canon's printing software for Macs was also a pleasant surprise - works well and is quick and easy to use for a variety of standard formats.

5 out of 5 stars Very impressed   January 21, 2010

I am a home user into amateur photography/ photo editing/ graphic design/ DVD authoring + the occasional official letter!

This is my third printer, and what a treat! After many years my trusty & reliable HP850c was replaced by a Lexmark printer with better photo printing (this was a freebie from my internet company when I upgraded my account). What a pain that was- The constant Lexmark 'nag' screens when ink levels were (very rapidly) depleted and the refusal to accept cheaper 'compatible' cartridges soon rendered this an unpopular, slow & inefficient lump of white plastic.

This Canon looks the part, installed smoothly (I have an Intel Quadcore system running XP) and the software interface has a lot of useful options & tweaks.

Printing is quicker & much quieter than my last printers & the mechanism has a reassuringly smooth & solid feel to it. I've read other comments about it seeming flimsy. Obviously the case & various paper trays are plastic & not designed for industrial scale abuse, but are perfectly adequate. Printing photos on half decent glossy paper is impressive & with a properly prepared image file is virtually indistinguishable from a professional print. It comes with a CD carrier to do on-disc printing on suitably coated CDs & DVDs & I think this is wonderful! Letters/documents in black are very crisp & sharp. I gather the 2 black inks are different for photo or document use.

This uses 5 separate colour (CMY + 2 black)ink chambers feeding a single print head. It's too soon to say about future running costs, but I've a good feeling about that too.

Negative points- none really, unless you're bothered by a bit of a slow start-up cycle before it's ready for action. Probably if I left it switched on all the time this wouldn't be an issue, but I'm trying to be energy efficient!

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Top printer - 2nd time around   January 12, 2010

Amazing printer, top rated by everyone, excellent quality on documents, photos are stunning, easy to use, reasonably compact. First printer left small mark on all 6x4 photo prints, followed on screen diagnostics to no effect. Called Canon who confirmed it may be beyond our ability to fix. Got replacement from Amazon without any problems in double quick time. Replacement is 100%. Ink is fairly affordable, 5 separate tanks minimises waste, print head is separate and replaceable so it's best of both worlds (Epson usually has cheap tanks but fixed head which gets clogged, HP has expensive tanks with head on each but very reliable). Would highly recommend to anyone who wants a top allround home desktop printer capable of fast docs and lab quality photos at good price.
